Announcing Digital Deborah
I’m really excited to announce my new brand, Digital Deborah. It combines several of my loves – slurpy lurid color, bold graphic design and interior design – into one awesome package.
My work has always been very commercial and I’m thrilled to be able to harness the reach of this wonderful world wide web to blow my own personal dandelion of creativity out into the world.
Just in Time for The Fourth of July
I always like to put my own spin on things. A couple of years ago, out on a location scouting trip for a sign manufacturing company I had been hired by to update their portfolio, I photographed a very large American flag against a stunning blue sky.
“…we haven’t time – and to see takes time, like to have a friend takes time…” Georgia O’Keefe
I uploaded all the images from that day and kept coming back to that flag. It was quite majestic against that deep blue sky. But I wanted something else. Something more…mystical. We see images of our flag all the time. It is everywhere. Ubiquitous. I wanted to create an image that evoked the deeper mysteries of family, tribe and clan.
I was very happy with the end result of my efforts. I walked away and let it be for a while. But later, laying in bed and doing that in between waking and sleeping thing, I had a sudden inspiration.
Words Have Power
I thought about the words, THOSE words…the ones on The Declaration of Independence. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to put those words with that image in a whole new way? We hold these truths…
The Digital Box Under My Bed
I spend a LOT of time with imagery. It’s a gift, it’s a curse. I have THOUSANDS of images stashed away, and most have never seen the light of day.
This flag image languished along side many others in my photo archives for several years. And that is where Digital Deborah comes in.
Commerce is as American as…
Mom, apple pie and baseball. America has traditionally been all about the small, independent business person. The expression “a mom and pop enterprise” is about as American as it gets.
That phrase most definitely applies to me and my family. We’ve all been self-employed for years. I have managed to support myself, either wholly or partly, through my artwork and creatively for more than 20 years. Digital Deborah is my new store front, where I proudly hang my shingle and call myself a self-employed American entrepreneur.
Emerging Trends and Buying American
It appears that one of the hottest trends for this Summer of 2016 is the round beach blanket or towel.
What better way to create a win-win situation than by showing your love of country, family, clan and tribe than by purchasing a product designed by an American artist?
Despite many (lets be honest….MOST) goods being manufactured in places other than America, you still benefit Americans when you purchase them.
Between my photography business and web design business, I directly or indirectly contribute to the financial welfare of literally hundreds of people, in a ripple effect.
Would it be BEST if more things were manufactured IN America? HELL YES. But we can still make a real difference in our fellow American’s lives when we choose to support local, or American created goods and products.
Just like my very good friend Deb Massa says,
“Every single artwork I create is an athletic harmony of emotions and paint being worked and reworked. When someone is so moved to buy one, it not only sustains me, it keeps me going.”
I hope more than a few of you check out her art work and spend your hard earned dollars in her shop.
So Get Your Beach Towel and Support an American
And if you don’t want a flag, get a naked woman riding a big fish through the galaxy. Because America is big and bold enough to deal with a naked woman riding a big fish through the galaxy.
