The Year was 1987 B.D.That was the year I started my first little photography studio. 1985 B.D. Before Digital.
Those were the days of film. Those were also the days of shooting and tensely waiting, sometimes for several days, to find out if anything you shot was worth keeping. Which is why I gave up on wedding photography fairly early on. Entirely too much stress.
I started out shooting with a basic Nikon SLR with a single kit lens. As I became more financially flush, I moved on to a Bronica medium format camera and stepped up to bigger negatives.
Because I always wanted to be a commercial photographer, I focused on finding films that would give me the fine-grained, higher contrast, punchy color I was looking for.
I continued to use those same films to photograph my portrait customers, as well as products, objects and architectural details.

Before I go any further, let me share with you what I’ve learned in reading iPhone Photography.
Um. Everything. That’s right. Everything. I’m so serious.
I had NO idea I could do so much fantastic, SERIOUS photography with my iPhone camera.
Just take a look at the photo on the left. Took it from my car, while I was waiting in the bank parking lot.
Not just yet. But I can see the day not far off, when we’ll be able to leave it behind without so much as a backwards glance.
I never thought I would say this, but….I hardly ever take my big guns out of the holster anymore. At least not for my personal shooting.

Digital Photography School has come out with another in their fantastic line of digital photography books: Natural Light – Mastering a Photographer’s Most Powerful Tool.
This time the subject is natural light photography. The darned thing is literally flying off the shelves. Apparently there is a great need for this type of material.
And why not? Natural light photography allows you to photograph without a lot of costly studio equipment, such as lights, stands, light modifiers, backgrounds or background stands. Shockingly enough, it allows you to harness readily available natural light.
The folks over at Digital Photography School have just released another in their already exemplary line of digital photography ebooks.
This one, Photo Nuts and POST: A Guide to Post Processing, is an extremely in depth and detailed tour around the back end of the photographic process.
View it as an under-the-hood manual, that will guide you through the many and myriad who-what-when-where-and-whys of photo post processing.
It would not surprise anyone who knows me well at all that I am a complete geography nerd. Many long years ago, when I was but a young thing, I was quite sure of what I wanted to be.
I envisioned myself, camera in hand, heading off into the wilds of….anywhere.
I could see myself traveling the globe, exploring little known places, meeting some of the world’s most exotic and obscure people and sending all that footage back to The National Geographic Magazine.
That’s not quite how things fell out, but that doesn’t mean I don’t still feel a certain leap in my chest when a copy of that august and venerable magazine lands in my hands.
